Hole saw arbour thread?

Post by Rorschach »

Picked up some tools at the car boot and amongst them was a brand new bi-metal hole saw.

Unfortunately the thread isn't the same as my Starrett arbour, it's larger at M16x1.5mm. Is this a standard size? I don't want to buy/make an arbour just to find this is some weird obsolete model.

I saw this arbour on eBay and wondered if it would work as it appears universal. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323819087088 ... R-TQycLZYg Scroll down and there are loads of pictures. Of course, £4.89 might negate the cheap blade purchase.

No details on the thread size though, couldn't see any thread sizes mentioned on anything I found either. I might just turn an adaptor on the lathe so I can use it on the starrett.

It would be the cheaper option R. I wish I had a lathe, a guy I know has a small milling machine that had a lathe as a part of it. I was very envious.

I'd try all the old bolts in my odds box, could even be a Whitworth, or take it to a store that sells loose bolts.

Yeah tried everything I had but an M16 fine pitch thread is not terribly common it seems.

Anyway got it sorted now. I found a nut that fit my Starret arbour and then turned a suitable thread on it for the new hole saw, made it a really snug fit so I had to use a spanner to get it into the hole saw. Works great, runs nice and true and is very secure. The nut was free and it took me about 30 minutes in total to make it but was good threading practice on the lathe (not something I do often). If I end up getting more hole saws with the same fitting then I will try and buy a proper arbour but for just the one this works great and I personally prefer the Starrett hole saws when I can get them.
