Hi there, I've a set of stairs that has this open design, meaning our dog (and any kids that come to visit) can easily fall through and cause themselves significant damage. As a short term solution (which has been there 3 years :) ) I've covered it with the green wire mesh you can see. I wondered, is there any tried and tested means of blocking this gap? I wondered if there were some steel bars that would attach to the each step and the lower edge of the first beam (mockuped up in the drawing) that I could purchase?
Thanks for any help,
Ant

Blocking off Stair gappage with metal bars?
It depends on what you want. I would be looking to take out the middle rail and fit spindles see https://richardburbidge.com/shop/stairp ... -balusters If you go this way you will find cheaper sources with a bit of searching. You could go with glass, or if you really want to go cheap then fill it with a ply panel.

Follow up question - do spindles exist that you put into place and then extend (telescopic)? Meaning I can fit them without having to first remove the top handrail?
Thanks again

The spindles do not have to be morticed into the stringer and handrails as you can get the type with mounting brackets on either end of the spindle to slide in the whole and fix in place. See https://www.shawstairs.com/product-cate ... case-kits/ these are kits with all you need. Ebay sell them.
