Sarfend Sunday

Post by dewaltdisney »

We were in Southend on Sunday as my granddaughter was with a party of friends in the Adventure Island theme park. As My son and DIL were waiting for her we decided to go down and join them for a walk down the pier. Now considering the horrible weather last week Sunday was a beautiful day and walking down the pier was a delight. Not a breath of wind, the estuary was totally calm, and the sun was bright and warm. I could not remember having such perfect conditions on the pier walk when I have done it a few times over the years in the past. We finished up in Clarkes fish and chip restaurant which has been there since I was a boy and we had a lovely meal to cap the day off. It is not often it all comes together like that and it is worthy of a mention.

I have also enjoyed evenings out in Southend, whilst stationed at the former HeavyLift base (oblivious of bad happening being committed) and recent Boxing day breakfasts along the front.

We probably visit a couple of times a year and I notice that there has been a lot of work to clean up the image as most of the seafront pubs have gone and there is a push to keep it family friendly. Quite a lot of Security around but it was peaceful, I do not know what it is like in the evenings now? I think the day coach trips, firms beanos, and down to see the lights are a thing of the past. The car park charges are enough to frighten off many at £2.60 an hour.
