Compact SDS drill. Milwaukee M12 or Makita LXT?

I'm just an occasional DIYer, not trade.

I've already got a corded 220V SDS plus drill. It's big and heavy and has always felt overkill when drilling holes in brickwork. I'm thinking of getting something smaller and lighter, but still capable of drilling into brickwork when putting up shelves in the garage, say.

I already have other Makita LXT and Milwaukee M12 stuff, so I'm considering between those two to avoid buying into a whole new battery system.

Makita have the DHR171Z, Milwaukee the M12CH. The Makita is about 10% cheaper and I'm leaning towards that, partly because 18v sounds like it might be more suitable for an SDS drill.

Any opinions for my use case? I'll still have the monster 220v for if I ever need something heavier duty. So after a lighter, more compact SDS for less demanding masonry drilling but when a non-SDS hammer drill isn't enough.

If you are only getting one then get an 18V

Personally I think the Milwaukee sds are far better than the Makita but they also tend to be heavier as well

Considering your context, leaning towards the Makita DHR171Z seems like a practical choice for several reasons. Firstly, the 18V power of the Makita could offer a bit more robustness for masonry drilling compared to the 12V Milwaukee M12CH, which can be a deciding factor for SDS drills. Additionally, the slightly lower cost of the Makita is an advantage. Since you already own tools from both ecosystems, you won't face the inconvenience of juggling different battery platforms. The Makita DHR171Z should be more than capable for the kind of light to medium-duty masonry work you're considering, while still offering a significant reduction in size and weight compared to your corded 220V drill.
