Stanley Fatmx Drill FMC626 18V - motor replacement

Post by leckyone »

My fatmax drill stopped working while drilling through a wall.

It didn't appear to be getting hot or smoking, just stopped running, wait a second or so it runs for a very brief time. Tried 2 other batteries with same results.

Dismantled the drill and removed the motor, ran the motor and could see some sparks from the commutator but not excessive. Removed the brush plate to expose the commutator and brushes.

The com was black so cleaned with sand paper and a small knife cleaning the the insulator grooves. The brushes are in good condition, reassembled the motor.

Tried motor again and ran at full speed for some 15/20 seconds then reduced speed and stopped as previous the brushes arcing again.

Anyone know of a replacement motor other than from Stanley, ie: Amazon or fleabay etc

What does google say?

It may be the "controls" that are at fault. The drill you mention only costs £130 new, I would be inclined to spend a bit more and get a decent brand of new drill.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

i had a strange one with a drill a while back.

it stopped auto stopping. which made it very hard to use for any screw driving type job.

the brushes were almost shot anyway so i got a new set fitted them and it was exactly the same

ordered a replacement trigger (second hand off ebay) fitted it. exactly the same.

knackered.

i spoke to a friend i play football with who builds r/c cars. he said has to be the trigger. but i cant imagine 2 triggers being exactly the same.

it only started doing it when i lent it to a plumber so it probably got infiltrated with inferior tradeitis

presumably you gave up, and got a new one?

NEVER EVER lend tools to ANYONE, NEVER. As it is not theirs they will use it wrong and break it, I once lent my neighbour my step ladder, I repeatedly asked for it back, I ended up putting a sign in my window saying he had got said steps, so don't lend him anything. 2 days later i got them back.

my general thoughs is overload protection on the drill as hole bigger than say 12mm in masonary hence same with any battery but unknown iff li-ion

yea screwfix usually have offers on dewalt stuff. id well had my moneys worth out of the old drill anyway. paid £150 and got a new drill and a couple of batteries and a charger.

the plumber to be fair only used it on a few screws whilst i was there also. it was likely on the verge of broken when i lent him it. he gave me it back and the next time i used it i was like woah whats the matter with this haha
