I am looking for some advice on purchasing a nail gun.

My main projects will be using pallet wood and I intend to use them for a multitude of projects, e.g. building planters. building shelves, candle holders, bird boxes, seasonal figures e.g halloween and xmas, and lots of jobs both big and small.

Up to now I have used screws, but am thinking I could really do with a nail gun, but am really confused by the different types needed for pallet wood.

Having looked at a lot of advice, i feel I am looking at a 2nd fix nail gun, as I feel a brad nail gun will be too lightweight for pallet wood??

So I was thinking of a 16 gauge rather than an 18 gauge, and like the look of the Dewalt DCN660N, but it is very expensive so want to know it will be suitable for my purposes?

I have not used one but I am asking are 16 or 18 gauge pins substantial enough for holding the pallet wood together. I have found pallet wood fairly poor quality and splits around ends are common when nailing and pull throughs. I do not know if I would spend the money on a cordless one, I have a cheap pneumatic pinner that works well off my small compressor. If you are workshop based then air or corded tools will work and they will be a lot cheaper. Just a view.

When I read the post title, I immediately thought of an air powered nail gun, then reading your post, I see dewaltdisney has said the same thing. I just looked at the cost I would still get an air powered one for the reasons dewaltdisney says, AND you can get a tyre inflator for a compressor too.

I guess I just needed a view on whether a nail gun would work with pallet wood of varying size and thickness. Most of the articles I have read refer to use with floorboards, skirting etc, but can't find anything that really concentrates on pallet projects.

I am not really wedded to cordless or corded or compressor driven, it's just whether I would be wasting my time buying a nail gun to use on the hard pallet wood.

For the smaller projects that needed more precision I would use glue with a nail gun, but for the outdoor planters, raised beds etc, which can be more rustic, i would probably stick to screws

John, have a look at this https://www.screwfix.com/p/titan-ttb517 ... 240v/71120 This should be fine for lots of your small work. For the bigger stuff, I would say stick to screws

i have both the ryobi 18 and 16 gauge nail guns you reallly need a collated gun with "D"shaped heads as the 16 is only a panel pin size
