Hello

I live in a flat, one of my neighbours is having a contractor conduct a survey and provide a report on damp in their own flat.

The management company has contacted the directors, asking for this to be approved.

I don’t know a great deal about this. Is this something that the resident of the flat should be paying for rather than the directors?

Yes, I'm one of the directors.

I know the directors aren't paying for it out of their own pocket - I phrased it badly in my original post.

But is this particular issue something that should be coming out of the funds for the flats or is it something the resident should be paying for?

Under what conditions is something the resident's responsibility and when is it covered by company funds?

This sounds like a building defect and as such I would have thought it was a management responsibility. You would repair a defective roof and this water ingress is just up rather than down. Having said that I think that you would want to assure yourself that this is actual fact as these damp people, many are charlatans, can often scare people into using their services. I would check it out.

I think director is a very grandiose title, to be honest.

As far as I understand it (which might not be very far), it's a title given to the residents who have bought a flat rather than renting and it's for Companies House purposes.

I certainly haven't been given access to other tenants' contracts.

I would resign, seriously, if you are a director, even if it is "just on paper" if something goes wrong, look who's name is on the paperwork. Clue, it's not my name. Best to get out before you must get out.
