Guidance for the new painter

Post by new_painter »

Hey guys,

I've just started doing painting jobs on my own, and was wondering what are the processes you usually do when doing prep/painting? Majority of cases I encountered is something like this:
The orange is the wall, White is the ceiling:

Circles are small chips, couple 2mm.
Triangles are bigger chips, let's say 10-15mm.
Squares are boarded off holes, from ex-light sockets etc.
Lines are just cracks.
And the long square at the bottom is some MDF cupboard.
We'll assume that there's no carpet and no items in the room.

My usual plan is:
1. Clean/open the cracks/chips,
2. Put the mesh tape over boarded holes/cracks
3. Go with a portable lamp, and try to find all the chips and pre-fill/fill them, prefill the cracks
4. White it dries, I caulk/woodfill all the areas that requires it, undercoat/prime the MDF
5. 2nd coat fill all the cracks/chips that requires it, woodfill/caulk too
6. 3rd coat fill all the cracks/chips that requires it
7. Sand everything down
8. Vacuum it
9. Undercoat/prime sanded off MDF
9. Cut Ceiling then roll it with miscoat, then again with paint
10. Cut Walls (top/bottom and around doors/sockets) then roll them with 12inch roller with miscoat, then again with paint.
11. Paint all woodwork and MDF afterwards.

Usually I'm given a roll of 120 sandpaper and 60 minute EasiFill for everything.
So the question would be, how would you do it if you got a better method if the quality has to be decent?

I was thinking of maybe miscoating everything first, and then going with a lamp and pencil to mark up all the chips/areas that need prep/filling, because sometimes i miss a spot or two, and then have to snag it after all the painting is done. I also feel like filler takes a long time to dry, especially if the crack/chip is bigger than 1 coat worth. I'm not sure how long you have to wait until you can miscoat the Easifill and paint it, I usually do it after it's been dry for a while.

Any advice is appreciated!
