Hi,

I'm in the motions of moving a 6ft wooden garden gate. At present the gate is fixed to a small wall (which is approx. 2ft wide) with some larch lap fencing on top. I want to remove the wall and move the gate into it's place. I was going to fix a post to the external house wall and then fix the gate to that. If that is OK what are the best fixings to use for attaching the post to the house? Obviously the gates gonna be hanging off of it so need to be pretty secure.

I finally got round to doing the gate, delayed due to cost of materials. Anyway, used 10mm x 135mm frame fixings for posts. The one thats attached to the house went on fine, after a bit of a bang with a hammer.

My problem is that on the one I'm trying to attach to a wall. What's happening is that the plug only goes in half way through the 4" x 2" so screwed in the screw as far as the plug and hoped to give it a bang again (i know this isn't the proper way to do this, but it appeared to work on the first one). Problem is the cheapie impact driver I saved for can't do the job and messed the screw up. Tried a second screw in another hole and the same thing happened. Now the screw heads are messed up completely from the driver, starting to bend from the banging and are sticking out about 40mm. I feel like a right dipstick!! What can I do to fix the problem tonight. Should I use an alternative instead. Maybe some sort of anchor fitting or something. I must get this done this evening as my garden is fully exposed...Please help!

Rawlbolts would be better if you can get one with a long bolt for the post thickness, see 44374 and 44377 M10

Alternative get around would be to drill the holes and put the plugs in the wall first.

Hi Scruff. That's a great link as B & Q is the only thing available to me. What length bolt though. Should I buy the bolt separately?

Also, How many of the rawlbolts do you think I would need. The height of the post is 2200mm. Am I right in thinking they are would be more secure. Should I drill new holes and start again. The existing holes are 150mm deep including the thickness of the post (2"). Sorry about all the questions.

I would use 4, two nearer the top say 400mm centers and the oth 2 space equally.

You could probably reuse the existing holes by drilling them out if you wanted too.

You will need to see what they have, regarding bolt length, but provided it will take 50mm fixing you should be ok, and yes it would be much stronger.

You need the M10 which from memory is an 12mm hole in the wall

if id have been doing that id have used spax screws. much better than frame fixings.

we use the 80mm torx headed screws to fit pvc windows. neater job than frame anchors and they get a hell of a hold in brick work. and no need for plugs either. just drill a 6mm hole and drive it straight in.

a word of warning though. only use screws of sufficient length to go into the brick work maximum 2 inches or ya either snap the bit or knacker ya drill.

there not so expensive really. can get em for a tenner ish a box iirc with discount nd all that. (thats for 80mm frame anchors) but the speed of the job, not having to use rawl plugs and having the torx type head so the driver bit rarely slips is great. plus they get a hell of a hold in brick work.

i fit a lot of pvc windows and doors. i always use those over anything else. perfect every time whereas with other types of frame fixings its not so good

Hi read with interest all the various solutions, when ive got to fix posts to walls I use masonary bolts, all you need to do is drill the hole and get your socket wrench onto the bolt and drive it home .... has worked every time for me .......
