I'm looking to buy some more wood primer (I've been using Leyland Trade paints, which I've found to be good) but all I can see is 'Acrylic Primer Undercoat'.
Does 'Primer Undercoat' mean a separate undercoat is not necessary? Or is it just a difference name for primer?
I've always used separate primer, undercoat and topcoat, so I'm a bit suspicious of a combined primer/undercoat. Is it any good?
Or should I see if I can track down some dedicated wood primer?
Wood primer vs primer undercoat - any good?

I use I use Johnstones Joncryl water based on new wood. For going over existing paint I use the Aqua undercoat and their Aqu gloss or satin.

I've used the Leyland acylic primer undercoat and tend to keep a tin in stock and like you've said it's decent enough. Also like you I've tended to go down the seperate paints route but have used the leyland successfully with just one coat under the topcoat. I've also done jobs with two coats of the leyland too. You can normally tell by the look of it if it will benefit from a second coat. I generally prefer oil based for outside work with the primer well thinned to soak in but acyrlics have improved and I have used this paint outside although I tend to put on two coats there as a matter of course.
