Hi folks,

I am looking for some advice on part of my laminate flooring mission. This is my first time laying laminate.

We have one step in our hallway - see images. Can anyone advise on how you would handle the step?

I was planning to put one board along the riser and then lay the flooring in the same direction as the hallway above the step. Is this the right approach? Or should I change the direction of the boards?

Also, how would I handle the stair nosing part on the edge of the step to get a nice finish? How would I ensure that a random stair nose would fit flush with the flooring?

general comments do not have staggered joins less than 250mm if you can help it especially in doorways
i would go for the plank sideways as it helps define the step on top and in front are your door jambs undercut ??

DWD - There are a couple of options there, particularly the ones that are matched to the depth of the planks.

Top advice there. I will keep an eye on the staggered joins. In relation to the door jams, yes, I undercut all of them with a multitool.

By sideways, do you mean have the planks run perpendicular to the rest of the hall?

Also, where would you start laying the planks? Start at the bottom of the main staircase with the tongue facing the stairs? And then have the cut (rough) side at the top of the single step to meet the riser plank, and cover this with the stair nose?

yes they just look like a normal step made from your flooring
look up "wooden step nosing" for other idea where you dont have the plank parallel on top

another point if you do use a nosing
get a wide one and firmly attach it to hopefully a bit off timber at least 38mm wide [63 or 89mm deep]so your nosing from rebate underneath would be 38mm+floor thicknesss on face then say 15-25mm for nosing so around 65 75mm plus rebate
the reason for this is you need the nosing to be fully supported and without fixed to a decent sized timber underneath you cant secure to the step front causing creaking rocking and failure
