How to remove emulsion paint from wood furniture?

Does anyone know the best way to remove emulsion splashes from some 60s/70s G-Plan shelving units I bought, which is in otherwise very good condition?
I've been able to remove most of it by rubbing gently with a damp cloth and sometimes helping it with a fingernail.
However, there are some places where the paint is trapped in the grain. I've tried softening it with olive oil but so far to no avail.
I used some surgical spirit/rubbing alcohol to remove some daubs on the back of the unit but am reluctant to use it on the varnished areas.
Thanks all!
