How to remove emulsion paint from wood furniture?

Does anyone know the best way to remove emulsion splashes from some 60s/70s G-Plan shelving units I bought, which is in otherwise very good condition?

I've been able to remove most of it by rubbing gently with a damp cloth and sometimes helping it with a fingernail.

However, there are some places where the paint is trapped in the grain. I've tried softening it with olive oil but so far to no avail.

I used some surgical spirit/rubbing alcohol to remove some daubs on the back of the unit but am reluctant to use it on the varnished areas.

Thanks all!

one off those sponge scrubbers with the plastic green on
do not use the green side iff you can help it'a few spots off water and rub with the grain
do not leave damp for more than a few mins to avoid water damage
