Hello, I have an Electician coming tomorrow who is rewiring our kitchen and fitting a grid switch. I need to add a hard-wired smoke alarm to the work we’ve asked for. Will this be done by running a cable from the grid switch or will it be taken from lighting cable?
All writes are exposed and accessible but I’ll have to move some stuff it taken from the lighting.
Many thanks,
Andy

Usually it is taken from the light, but it depends how it is wired, I can't see from here.
Also in new builds/alterations, smoke alarms should be interlinked, so it should be connected to your other smoke alarms, unless they are radio interlinked. Oh, and I presume you mean Heat Alarm for a kitchen? (No one puts smoke alarms in a kitchen)

Sorry, I did mean heat alarm. The lighting is wired as spot lights with an in, out, switch and wire daisy chain to the spots. Where as the grid switch is being wired at the moment. I was hoping it could be wired from there and always left one but don’t know.

In, out and switch.
That means there is a neutral, there is no need for a neutral at the switch, since it will be live in, switched live out, so it looks like it will have to be "as usual" taken from the lights.
But they must be interlinked.

Any detectors will have to be interlinked by WiFi as the others aren’t connected and are very very old.
The junction box shows that live in, out, switch are connected and neutral, in, out, lights connected so I guess he will wire in there. I best go to screw fix and get a new junction box!
Many thanks

Get wago connectors and a wago box, much better.
I believe wi-fi smoke alarms do not comply to building regs, if you have a power cut they are not interlinked. Radio interlinked complies, as does hard wired. If your other smoke alarms are "very old" might be a good idea to change them, smoke alarms only have a working life of 10 years. (Shush, I changed all of mine late last year, 11 years old)

Let the spark use his stock parts to do it. And as for alarms use Aico brand

Thank you. I’m really enjoying learning about the electrics in the house. Tempted to do an evening class to learn more but not sure how useful it will be once we’ve finished doing our house up.

Depends what it teaches, I would suggest you save your money, but look at some electrical videos, I suggest you start

No point in watching all of them, but look at the wiring ones, don't rush, any questions, ask, but don't rush, Rome wasn't built in a day
Yes, I know I said don't rush twice, no point in rushing.
