Goodwin Sands

Many years ago a chap I vaguely knew was telling us a story of an experience he had when he was a boy. His uncle lived in Kent and owned a motor cruiser and he invited family members out for a sea trip on a summer outing. He was a novice sailor and these days you probably have to have a Boatmasters’ Licence but they all took to sea. They were motoring towards the Goodwin Sands and being inexperienced they ran aground. After discussing the situation they decided that they would have to wait 5 hours for high water to get off so they dropped anchor and waded ashore. They spent the day picnicking, playing cricket, and walking the sand sealine boundary. As they saw the sea levels starting to rise they got back to the boat and it lifted off allowing them to sail back to port. I must admit that I thought it sounded a bit of a tall story but I saw this video that reawakened the story in my mind see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfMb1DeqrqA&t=14s
