Is there a trick to getting this gate latch apart? The latch has broke off and needs replacing.
I've removed the screws, I can't seem to get the two ends off. I assumed it would simply be a case of pulling to remove but it isn't.
I've tried pulling to no avail, I've tried twisting but no luck.
Anyone had any experience before I bring out the hack saw? Must be old, the screws are very rusted.
It's so stiff I can only assume that the shaft which the handle threads through is what's holding it together, meaning I have to cut off the handles to get it off, but if that's the case I can't understand how it was fitted in the first place?

Good luck with that, an angle grinder would be quicker.
As you figured, it is a square bar of metal going through the door, with a "handle" on either side. The handle is held on by screws which you have now removed, but as it's outside the bar will corrode and rust to the handles. If one side doesn't want to give, try the other side.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

Already broken the end of the hammer, either cheap hammer or really stiff. Cutting with a hacksaw now, hopefully does the trick.
