Any tips to prevent plaster staining bare wood

Plaster stains wood right?
I've got plasterers coming in and want to leave 4 purlins exposed and sand and stain them afterwards.
I'm thinking of covering the timber up with masking tape and plastic.
Has anyone got any other tips?
