How do I remove this fireplace?

I want to remove this fireplace. We have been quoted £550 to have it removed for us but to save money I want to give it a go. The plan is to have the wall skimmed, including the small alcove gap that will be left once the fireplace is removed.

Does anyone have any tips for me?

I am planning to simply smash up the hearth into pieces before removing that. As for the surround and mantel I can see it is screwed onto the wall in places so will begin by trying to unscrew before removing.

It is a gas fire so I will have it capped by a tradesperson.

Thanks

There might be hidden brackets under the plaster on the left and right sides at about 3/4 height. It is all quite Diyable

Thank you! Do you mean brackets for the surround?

Yes they are usually thin brackets or tabs fixed on the surround back, screwed into the wall, and plastered over. I would use a reciprocating saw to cut the face off and work backwards Best £40 you will spend https://www.screwfix.com/p/titan-ttb881 ... 240v/282vv for your job.
