Long story short, there's quite large gaps around the soil pipe coming out of the house. I only noticed this when I took out a bath tub side panel and noticed I could see broad daylight in the corner. It's up in the first floor, but still could be something pests or birds could make a home in, not to mention loss of heat.
I'm sure the perfect solution would be to replace the bricks around this and cut out a neat hole around the pipe from the new bricks. However, that's a lot of work given that I'm not too worried about having a pretty solution.
Can I fill this gap with wire wool + expanding foam to fill 95% of the space and then fill the remaining 5% with silicone to waterproof it? Is this a reasonable solution?
Otherwise, whatelse can I do as a fairly novice home DIYer?

You could do that and let in some brick slips. These are thin veneer-like bricks to face up with and they are fairly easy to shape around your pipe with basic tools. It will just disguise the area and make it look neat. See https://brickslips.co.uk/

That's a great idea. Didn't even know brick slips were a thing. My previous idea was to pulverise an old brick into dust, and blow this onto to the silicone layer but that would have been a lot of effort and probably not look so good for such a big gap.dewaltdisney wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2024 11:00 am You could do that and let in some brick slips. Another thought I had was to put some thin cloth or greaseproof paper over the pipe before you put your filler in. This might make it easier to pull the pipe out if you ever need to in the future. Careful use of an angle grinder will cut the slip to shape.
