Demise of Casinos

Mrs D and her aunt saw Jane McDonald at the Cliffs Pavillion in Southend yesterday. As parking is horrendous I acted as a taxi and did the drop/off pick up and to make things easy (100 miles of journeys thanks) I dropped them at the Casino on the seafront (we are still members) so they could get something to eat and kill time before going to the nearby Cliffs for the performance. Now we used to have great nights in the Casino back in the 80s when it was very upmarket with a smart dress code and we would go with friends for a meal and a gamble. Sadly those days have gone, the slide happened in the 90s when the dress code went and a lot of riffraff descended. Drug dealer types laundering their money, scruffy oiks gambling their benefit money away, it was no longer worth going. Mrs D's mum and her three sisters all continued going for a meal together and a flutter up to when they no longer could do it through age and infirmity. How sad to see it a shadow of its former self, a victim of the times as online gambling has made inroads into the casinos. Strangely, the receptionist recognised Mrs D's aunt and said 'ahh the sisters' and she was genuinely sad to hear of their passing. They had a very nice what would be called a bar meal but it was excellent and the aunt had a flutter. I felt sad it was yet another thing that no longer exists in its previous form even though it is still well run and the staff are courteous and helpful as ever. Nothing lasts.

I've never been to a Casino and have no intention of ever doing so. My dad was a greyhound trainer and a heavy gambler to boot. The amount of money I seen him winning and then losing again made me shy away from betting forever.

My middle son is into Football betting. To what level I don't know but it pisses me off. Thankfully my oldest son doesn't bet.

I’ve never seen the appeal of gambling either. The only casino I’ve ever been into was an on board one on a honeymoon cruise . We were given $10 to use , walked in and it was gone quicker than it has taken to write this post…

I am not a gambler, it is a mugs game. In the old days, I would gamble cheaply on the 50p roulette table and just enjoy the experience, a bit like the lottery I never expected to win, it was just a part of the evening. I think some people went there expecting to win a bundle, just like people playing one-armed bandits. I think the only time I won anything was in a Casino in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife in the 80s. I put a few coins in a slot machine and it kicked out £40 which was a decent sum then. I quit immediately and kept my winnings.

I think Covid hit Casinos hard and many never recovered because of the emergence of all these online gambling apps that filled the void during lockdown. These apps are a dangerous form of gambling as you have to regulate yourself to a certain extent and morons cannot.

I remember watching one of those programmes about the seriously rich some time ago . On it were two brothers (I think) who started an internet gambling site with very little but within a few years had amassed close to £100M each. If ever an advert for it being a mugs game…

When i had just turned 18 i used to go casino couple of nights each week. I'd wait fir a run of 5 or 6 black or odd then stick a fiver on the opposite. If it didn't win then I'd double the bet. Regularly walked out once I'd won 30 or 40 quid. Problem was one night i got up to about 200 quid and still hadn't won. I stopped at that point crystallising the loss. Was a bit of fun and a good lesson but I don't really gamble now. I'd probably have a bet 1 on 1 with someone or the very occasional go on the lottery.

That is how gambling can get people, you had the sense to walk away, but others do not.
