Primer for walls...

Hi all,

I have read the sticky re priming walls for paint but it didn't fit my question so here we are

I've got three walls to paint, they were woodchipped before but now stripped and I'm at the repair stage. The existing plaster is sound but a bit scabby with signs of its past life etc.

I'm going to sand them a bit then coat them with Zinsser Gardz to seal the paste remnants etc then repair two walls and attempt a light skim coat on the one really bad wall followed by a sanding to remove any snots etc.

I'm not sure what to do after the repairs & skim - do I seal again with the Gardz or go straight in with diluted non-vinyl emulsion or something else?

No PVA will be used here

is there a recommended matt white for priming - even better, is there a recommended matt white that can be used diluted to prime and neat to finish? Something with good coverage?

Generally you need a non- vinyl emulsion for the mist coat then a vinyl matt for the top coat/s, however I've had good results with Johnstones trade vinyl matt for both.

I think i'll try the non-vinyl option this time, its a bedroom so low traffic and means only one type of paint to buy for mist and top coats.

Great post.

Moving house soon hopefully and the property has a few dark painted walls and some wallpapered.

I think ile probably use the Zinsser wallpaper product for the wallpapered walls (then paint the colour of choice) but I was going to use the Zinsser 123 to primer the darker painted walls. Upon checking youtube it seems a lot of people just use white paint then put the colour of choice on over the top. The Zinsser 123 primer does seem quite expensive as well.

I had one wall that was dark burgundy/red - it took three coats of Dulux White Matt to cover it, no other products, nice and easy.
