If the wall hasn't been wallpapered, you should be able to see where the plaster has been cut out anf filled in, even if it has been sanded really well there would be a slight texture difference. This by no means should be your only evidence to go on, it should be corroborated with the live wire detector.
Sounds good, does that device detect water pipes as well as electrical wires?

Some of those detector devices "claim" to be able to detect electric cables, wooden studs and copper water cables.

However, in my experience they are very hit and miss, sometimes giving false results.

Yep, I did see that, but sometimes they do reply.
