are these totally obsolete now?

I have old units in my garage (4ft, 5ft, 6ft) and need new tubes for many of then (T8 fitting iirc)

Went to B&Q and Toolstation and they didn't have anything that looked right.

They had some T8 ones but they were LED. Would your 'batten' need to be a special type to take an LED tube?

It depends on what you have as to what you have to do to convert it. Some you have to take the gear out, some just use a link where the starter is.
