Bathroom Extractor

Post by markb »

Hi all HNY

Just tried to replace a bathroom extractor fan with a new one.
The old one comes on with the light and then over runs via the switch outside the bathroom. On/off on right, timer is the left box (dial broken so can't alter time of over run).
Live, neutral and earth go into the fan - there are 2 connectors on a block.
New fan won't work.
Old one back on and working.
This is the second new fan today, first one bought by mistake as it had a pull cord on it. Neither worked so it's not a faulty unit.
New fan is Expelair DX100S

What's going on?

TIA

markb, would you remove the lid of the box next to the switch and post a picture? (Mains off first, obviously)
As Neelix suggests, the probable reason your new fan does not work is the box (That I asked for a picture of) is actually a transformer. Which transforms (funny that) 240v ac to 12v ac. So your new fan is expecting 240v ac but only gets 12v ac, so does not work. So as you don't have any means of testing (If you had, you would have tested it first) a picture of what is under the box lid would be most useful.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

Thanks guys yes it's 12V doh.

It looks like they mostly sell 12v fan as a fan + transformer set. Would it be ok to just replace the fan or should I replace both?

TIA

It is up to you. You have two choices.
1) Buy a 12v fan and hope it will work.
2) Check to see if there is voltage at the fan, then decide your next step.
