Exposed beam on side of house?

Post by elliep »

Hi,
I'm just hoping for a bit of advice re this beam end that is exposed on the side of my kitchen extension. (Extension was fitted before we bought the house, and we suspect was DIYed by the previous owners)
We've been having problems with the kitchen ceiling leaking when there is heavy rain, and I wondered whether this might be the cause. There are other issues that have just been fixed that will *hopefully* sort the roof, but the builders didn't do anything to address this.
Do I need to call them back, or is this how it is supposed to look?

Exposed beam on side of house?

It looks like the end of a joist that was previously covered by that crosshatched render. I suggest that you consider chiseliing the joist end back a half inch below the wall surface and fill the gap around the edges with frame sealant. Then make good with a small batch of render. The exposed area above needs to be looked at, it needs to be the same as the adjoining edge closers.
