Airbrick vent

Post by molotour »

can anyone explain the point of this vent ? I had a builder come to my house who was confused about it and did not see the point of it. My house is 30 years old and the floor is solid concrete. The only thing this vent does is blow cold air into my living room. I understand airbricks under DPCs venting cavities under floors but I dont have that so what exactly is this vent for ?

It was probably there for a gas fire or other open heat source. Any combustion that is not room-sealed must have an airflow vent. If you do not have any open heating and just radiators it is redundant so seal it up.

If you look at the vent you will see it is 2 bricks tall, and 1 brick wide, so take the vent out and put in 2 bricks.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

If you want to leave the exterior vent grill in place cut some plasterboard to size, wrap some thick polythene over it, and cover the inside face. Fix some cleats around the edges to the interior face opening to allow some more plasterboard to sit flush on the inside wall. Fill the void with insulation and cover with the board gluing or screwing to fix. Finish to match in with the surrounding wall. I agree that letting bricks in would do a proper job but it is all ldown to your skill level. A piece of card taped over the inside would be the simplest way to stop the draft.
