My Mondeo 2.0L TDDi (2000) has just popped its starter motor. refuses to go, just a loud screeching noise. anyone know how much for a new one. is there a cheaper way to DIY it ?

Sounds like the solenoid isnt engaging properly. Giving it a tap with a hammer on the solenoid sometimes works as a temporary cure.

Put it in 2nd or 3rd gear and rock the car, without the ignition on please
May also be a flat battery

You should be able to get a service exchange if you look/ask around at a fraction of the new price

We had a starter motor on our landrover discovery about 5 months ago and that was £110 and looking at most starters they range from about 70 to 190 quid

i've been trying to get the offending item off to have a look and determine whether the damage is mostly in the starter gear or the gearbox fly ring.
being an aircraft mechanic means all my tools (the few i have) at home are imperial. i can't get enough access to the front underside of the engine to get the thing out.
so its now booked in at the vets.

just have to see what the verdict is on the fly ring when they get to see it.

Hope it's not the same as my son-in-laws Mondeo, had a simular problem and turned out to be starter ring, which involved having a new flywheel assy. including new starter.
His is a 52 plate and was 3 weeks out of second hand warranty !
Still cost him nearly £1500.00 though
Sincerly hope it's just the starter

car is now fixed. turns out there was no damage to the ring gear

just the starter itself. new one fitted, all good.
