I have rising damp in my victorian terrace. The damp is along the length of the entry wall. The entry itself is slabbed and protected from rain. What could be casuing the damp? Could the slabbed entry, which looks relatively new, have something to do with it? How can I tell if its bridged the dpc?

Also the brickwork is damaged in certain places - could this damaged brickwork be to blame for the whole wall? There is also a black coating on the bricks - does this need to come off and let everything breathe?

Im new to this DIY lark so any help greatly recevied

Sounds like you have rising damp, is the dpc clear on the outside and is at least 150mm above the ground level ?
If not then you will need to dig around the affected areas and give it at least 150mm clearance from dpc to finished ground level if this is not the case then you may well need to have a new dpc injected
