Damp....help!

Post by xplosiv »

Hi All,

I’ve noticed a couple of damp patches in my hallway at the bottom near the skirting. It’s actually a wall that isn’t around the perimeter of the house, i.e. the wall divides the hallway and the living room. Obviously I’m quite concerned about this so I’m hoping someone out there might be able to answer a few questions for me.

I bought the house about a year ago and I remember seeing in the paperwork that some damp proofing was installed some time in the 1980’s; I’m going check later if that included the hallway. My questions are these:

1)If damp proofing was installed in the 1980’s, should it still be effective now? How long generally is it before new damp proofing is required after initial installation?

2)If the damp patch in the hallway is the only area of damp that I can find, would it be overkill to have the whole house treated for damp? Or is that what is needed ideally? Is there a test to determine which walls are damp and need attention and which are fine or is it just a case of visually seeing/smelling it?

3)I live in a 2-bedroomed Victorian mid-terrace house. Could anyone give me an idea of what is going rate (I live in Bristol, but I know prices will vary) for damp treatment on (a) a relatively long straight hallway; and (b) a whole house. I’ve found this link with some estimates; do these look about right? Dead link removed by Admin 25/01/2021

Thanks for your help!

Thanks
Lee
