Hello people.Could someone please tell me if it is ok to tile straight onto old render (plaster came off when removing old tiles!)....now left with just a sandy ,but seems firm render.Bit bumpy in places bout 3 mm dips here and there!...could the adhesive fill that ok or has the surface got to be dead level???

Or is it best getting it bonded over...not that i want to do that...

Any tips most appreciated

Cheers.

hi kenny, i presume the render you refere to is actually the browning or base coat plaster. from the sounds of it i would think it would be better to pva it then skim it with some finish plaster. it really isnt that difficult to do if you are going to tile it.

what size area is this?

Like panlid says a quick skim will level it up.

This is a great opportunity at trying to skim, becaue it is being tiled over afterwards.

PVA the existing plaster, then skim then tile.

Do Not pva between the new plaster and tiles :wink

Read the PVA sticky above if you have not read it before.

If it is actually render in an older house, then it's fine to tile straight onto. (It has a rough sandy texture)

Prime it with something like BAL APD then tile and a good cement based (powdered) adhesive will take out 3mm comfortably.

If it is a base plaster then do as the guys suggest above.
