Trouble with Linux and Unix is it is so awkward to make basic changes to screen resolutions and that kind of thing (and I am a IT guy, so what it is like for 'normal' users, god knows).

MS Windows has made the normal user experience a whole lot easier, have to admit

install it at your own risk, that's a good start

Windows filled a gap definitely, Apple were and still are too expensive and thats why ms had to bail them out. At the time unix was way to complicated and so was linux at first. Windows was cheap and easy, so easy virus's ran wild, and ran on pc hardware which was not expensive or proprietary.

Now a days linux is a lot easier and though doesn't yet trouble ms profits ms are very worried about it. Infact your probably using something that runs linux and don't even know it. I recently bought a webbook which came with the latest ubuntu installed and its excellent. Windows is expensive probably a quarter the money you pay for a cheap computer and requires hardware that until recently you only needed to run top games and apple runs on pc hardware and still charge the earth.

Linux is free, and runs on anything, but you have to learn a bit.

Well it is - great JUNK. A toy in both terms of hardware and software and to call XP, Vista Windows etc an 'operating system' has me in stitches.

True MS 'own' the market. A 'market' where computers are used at homes by Mums and Children - say it all really. Oooh! UNIX is SO complex I don't think I can use that coz I am stupid, OK then use Windoze!!" Is that an excuse for humanity generally?

Pay cheap get cheap. Apples are 'expensive' because they are built properly and OSX is a proper operating system. It's a bit like comparing a Leyland Metro (MS Windows) with an Aston Martin (Apple).

I personally find I can do all I need to do on computers that generally cost less than a fifth of the equivalent spec of an apple. And can do the stuff I need to do on an OS that costs nothing. Cheap/free doesn't mean crap and why pay more when you don't have to.

I've loaded SP3 on to my laptop and have had no problems except - it's brought up the blasted log on screen, which I managed to get rid of before. Now it comes up with Administrator and asks for a password, which I have'nt set, so I have to type in my user name and click enter to get into the machine. I've not set a password for myself, so don't need to enter one. All I want is to go back to where I used to switch the machine on and go straight to the desktop. Grrrrrr.

I have to admit that I find MS the most irritating company. Does anyone like Vista? Have it on a PC at work, wouldn't have it on another.

Yup, done all that several times over, makes not a happorth of difference

Have you installed any Netgear hardware by any chance?

If not try it this way.

Do the same but put the tick back.

Click OK and restart.

Do it again and remove the tick. You should be asked the username to logon with.

Type your username and password (if you have one) and click OK.

Try again.

Does it on one of mine, all I do is hit enter without putting anything in the box

All I did was to run control passwords2 and put a tick in the box requiring users to log on, then in control panel - users, chose the welcome screen rather than the log on and disabled the guest, now it goes straight to the desktop when I switch on.

Like I've always said, the people who design computer porogrammes come from another planet with a language that no one on Earth has managed to translate yet!

this thing with the passwords can happen when parts of the .NET framework is installed (Norton Ghost uses .NET, for example).
You then may not have an option NOT to have a password, but can still set things up to bypass the need to enter it (there is a MS Powertoy that will do this for you)

Word of warning to all you dudes that just have their PCs startup without needing to log on .....

Chances are you also have cookies enabled so your passwords and logins are saved, so you either go straight into to all your favourite sites (saved in your favourites/bookmarks) with a single click - or by entering the first letter of your login name- and it displays possible names.

All very easy and convenient

And if you get your PC nicked, any old half-dead scrote can do this just as easily without even needing ANY info
At least if you have a password set, if someone else tries to use that PC, they can't access all this stuff without at least a little bit more effort

Sure, some better sites do not allow ALL the info to be saved on the PC but plenty of sites do

Is having to type in a Password that much effort compared to the amount of effort you would need to go to if PC nicked
