Not used either, but I would go for the converter if it uses the on-board SATA controller as adding less complication.
The on-board IDE will do 2 IDE devices I am sure

Looks very neat and compact. I think on older OSes (W2K), you may need to load a SATA driver as well

Replace the DVD with a newer SATA controlled one and use the one ATA cable for the two HD's.

EDIT: Thinking about it, IMO IDE and ATA (PATA) stuff is out of date and slow now compared to SATAII so you would be as well to backup and update all your HD's.

yep thought of that but means replacing my dvd writer ,i know they are only 25 quid but got this ide to sata converter for a fiver

nothing wrong with the writer at the min (only 4 months old),when it starts playing up it goes in the bin and will get a sata one then
oh and replace HD`s as well
some boards nowadays dont even have any ide slots

Not used the ide to sata convertor, but my old pc was ide and new pc was sata and so I got an hard drive enclosure that plugged into the USB and removed the old data from my ide hard drive and copied it onto my sata hard drive.

I have an ide cable inside of my new pc, but it is not used as everything else is sata.

so been out and bought a new sata dvd writer and left both hd`s on the ide channel

oh well it was only a fiver :cb

anybody want to try it out they are willing to have it free of charge
