loft light

Hi
i want to add a new light in my loft i have located a 1.5 mm wire that lead to a ceiling rose my question is can i cut in to this wire(with the power switch off )add a junction box and come out with 1.0 mm or do i have to use 1.5 as is already used in the circuit any advice appreciated.

It depends on the rating of the lighting circuit fuse, if it is a 10A fuse or breaker then use 1.5, or if its a 6A then 1.0mm is fine. Just make sure the cable you are proposing to tap into is a permanent feed and not a switched feed from another junction box.

Why bother cutting into the cable and putting on a junction box?

Just terminate the cable straight into the ceiling rose. Much better job.

Better still if you try and find the last light on the circuit which normally only has 2 cables and terminate the feed for the loft light there.
