Taking tiles off plasterboard

Post by steve28 »

My mate is wanting to retile his bathroom, his current tiles are stuck onto plasterboard as his wall has been dot and dabbed. Will he be ok to just tile over the existing tiles?
If so what prep will he need to do before starting?

You can tile over tiles, but it can create problems.

If you do intend to tile over the existing tiles you should clean the existing tiles with sugar soap first. Also make sure that you stagger the joints from the existing tiles and the new tiles.

what kinds of problems are you talking about? mayor ones? So do you think it would be better to remove all the tiles and fix the damaged plaster board because I can imagine that it will cause quite a bit damage?

tiles on tiles are only held by the strength of the original tile adhesive which is then holding twice as much weight

Knock off the old tiles and repair the drywall, or even replace it if you have too, tiles on tiles is not a good practice although it is done.

I would sooner replace the plasterboard, it's a lot cheaper than having to redo the job using new tiles!
I started out with nothing, I still have most of it.
