Lighting problems when trying to put up a spotlight

I've just moved into a pretty old house and I have a question about the wiring coming out from the light in one of the bedrooms. Apologies if this is a daft/obvious question but I'm a bit wet behind the ears with electrics!!

The spot light I'm trying to put up has the standard 3 wires as expected but there's 4 coming out of the ceiling (red, black, blue and another!). I'm told that I should twist 2 of them together to make the 3 that go into the spotlight.

Is this correct? Which 2 would need to be combined?

Problem is the current adapter doesn't fit into the housing of the spot - and I'd rather not make the hole in the ceiling bigger so it does!

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks.

These questions are never straight forwards.

Is the fourth wire a bare wire or is it sheathed with green and yellow sleeving?

Do any of the other wires have coloured tape on them?

I can't answer your question, but if you answer these perhaps someone else can do
