Oak Skirting and Door

Post by skiking »

I'm about to install some oak skirting and a new oak internal door. I want to keep the natural look of the oak and bring out the grain - what best to use - Danish oil ?

Whats the best way to attach skirting to the wall, glue or nail/screw baring in mind this isn't going to be painted

On a connected point, putting up the skirting might bring out the fact that my plastered walls are not that level  . Is there a product that I can use to fill in the gap between the plaster and the skirting that will blend in with the natural oak. I'm not expecting huge gaps

Re Finishing: What about Osmo polywax? I've used this on doors and other bits to give a nice durable finish

I've just finished fitting some pine skirting and used no more nails applied ina wavy patern to the back of it. I pushed it onto the wall then brad nailed it to the studs behind the plasterboard to pull it into the wall. There were a few gaps along the top so I ran a bead of caulk along it.

On oak I use Dulux clear acrylic satin varnish This keeps a nice natural finish and it does not yellow. It does darken slightly over a period of time but it is still natural. Varnish protects the door from finger matks and the odd knock it may get.

Cheers for the replies - perhaps I should have posted this in the P&D section to attract more replies

ive never fitted anything but pine skirting. however if that was to get stained id drill, counter sink and plug the holes. I should imagine this would be possible?

trend do a range of counter sinks and plug cutters in their snappy range

also is it in an old house? i fitted new skirtings in my house that had been made up to the same profile as the original skirtings. (victorian type house)

when i did this i coppied how it had been done originally with timber plugs between the bricks. though obviously i had to make up new plugs as the old ones had broken up over the years
