damp proofing qualifications

Post by boodle »

Hi everyone.

This is my first post after spotting the forum late last night.

im a plasterer. and i also work as a general house do-er up-er.

im looking to start offering damp proof solutions to my customers along with the plastering to find more work.

how do i go about finding the qualifications needed to be a damp proofer, are there courses i can get myself on, pref a short week long intensive one?

Im sure ill be back with more questions soon, but ill leave it with those for the moment

Thanks :hello2:

there is nothing stoping you sorting out damp for clients.
but its another thing saying you WILL guarantee its eradication.
For this you will need support of the BWPDA of which you need to be a qualified surveyor and hold there certification. only one employee needs this whithin a company to comply. its reasonably simple to study for and learn, just a series of short books and some on site knowledge.
Its like getting your pilots licence, 99% of what is required for acreditation you will never need or use.
Also you will need to be an approved installer from a major chemical supplier. They will then back your guarantees.
I work for local authorities, the church of england, national house builders and developers, if it was easy to just fling some gloop in the holes and that was that, im sure these companies would do it themselves as they do not part with there money easily.... so its a little more complicated than a guy turning up with a gun and some chemicals, you need a little back up and support. Just some food for thought.
In the first instance try the property care association web site , they are part of the bwpda and run the courses, all the info is there on what you would need.

The chemical companies guarantee their chemicals only, not the installation.
Anyone may give a guarantee for whatever, but you are then solely responsible for the guarantee.
You must go and work as an operative (in my opinion) before setting out on your own, also you can do an operatives course and later the "surveyor's" course.
If you want to know more post me.
Good luck.
