Iam converting a portion of our home into a self catering holiday let I intend th make my own cabinet carcasses whats the opinion on this as opposed to shop bought, as space is an consideration this has led my to rend away from bog standard sizes does anyone know where I can get plans I may adapt

harder to keep clean and maintain

The cabinet carcasses are the least expensive part of the kitchen in relation to good quality cabinet doors so unless you are requiring a carcass that is far from standard then i would suggest that you buy them and save your pennies.

As you only mentioned making the carcasses i am assuming that you already have the doors in which case i would go for the same supplier of carcass as the one who supplied doors that way you can rest assured that the pre bored hinge holes will not be a problem matching up.

As a 8x4 sheet of marine ply is 25quid I thought that the cost would be comparable, considering it cost a lot to get stuff delivered off shore and it cost 47 quid to take the car over I was hoping someone could point me in the directions of ready drawn plans failing that I may get hold of an old carcass and use it as a template

you will get roughly i unit per sheet assuming your making your own doors!!!!

you wont be able to use kitchen hinges on doors of less than around 18mm

you will have splinterd edges and the end grain to fill in and paint

you will need to give it 2 or 3 coats off gloss to make it wipe clean
all the grain will raise and be shown up by the gloss

you would be better off with green mdf well painted

by marine ply i am assuming you mean exterior ply as marine ply is around the £60 mark

Id agree with Big-all

Green moisture resistant mdf would give you a much smoother finish with less work and none of the same problems associated with plywood like splintering of edges.

Id bet you could get them cheaper if you bought ready mades! (flat packs), even if you came to the mainland and popd to b and Q
