Guys and Girls, still can't decide what to do with the walls for tiling in my bathroom. NEVER tiled before.

On the one hand was suggested I re plaster boarded on the first pic below, but as I have gone round wall in good nick apart from the adhesive left behind.

Can I "scrub, clean,sand" the adhesive off to leave a good surface? PLEASE see below this is urgent now the mrs will be going bonkers if I don't just make my mind up and start!!!!!!!

I'd cut a piece of plasterboard for the gap in picture 1.


Removing as much as the old adhesive will make fixing the new tiles much easier.

I have heard of people steaming the old adhesive off, but have not tried it myself. The sander should sand it smooth.

You could probably tile over the top of it all with a thick bed, but it would probably be too difficult for a novice to get them all flat.

Ok thanks, I've cut the first pic out and all ready for a new piece.

Will attempt sanding the other walls and see what happens.

Also going to get a tiler in for a quote as always said I won't attempt jobs I'm not 100% confident of and I;m not to be honest. MUST have saved money stripping tiling out etc and preparing so not waste of time etc.

Now any good tilers in Somerset/Devon anyone??????

Rebaord the offensive bit in the first picture, then use undercoat plaster ( hardwall is preferred on this forum) to square up the rest before tiling. Make sure you PVA before plastering though

Ok so does undercoat plaster go on easy or do you need to be a plasterer! I'm not lol

Also don't loads of people say don't use PVA when tiling?

I'd talk to your plasterer first before you do what isn't required.

At least I'd reboard in Pic 1.

Yep I've cut out and will reboard the first pic no problem.

Got a tiler coming to quote but also going to try sanding the other walls and see how smooth they come out etc.

Undercoat plaster is easy as you are only levelling up the tile adhesive. Be patient, do two coats and give it a chance to go off between coats.

PVA when tiling may be a no-no but when plastering it is often a necessity.

Oh I see DOH you mean PVA under the undercoat plaster!!!!!! LOL

As for the rest.........tape up the door. (With you inside obviously)

And go for it with a belt sander.

The walls will need priming after that to lose the dusty feel to them. After all the dust has been cleared up first, And after the mrs has given you a bolocking for covering the house........it does get everywhere even with taped up doors

Remember......the flatter the walls........the bigger the tile. Within reason

DO NOT TILE ONTO A BACKING PLASTER if your gonna use bonding or hardwall you should get it skimmed, and remember a skim coat or a float and set wall will only carry aprox 20kg Per meter sq so check the weight on a box! before sticking em up!
Looking at them walls id patch you hole first! then scrape the old addy off with a STIFF scraper! see whats left and then skim it!

rule of thumb is measure in mm convert that to sq Metres cos you get an average of a meter per box!
