Is it an RCD that is tripping out? like the main switch on your fuseboard. If so then the kitchen light is it a fluorescent? if so probably the capacitor in it has broken down and when it is turned off the capacitor is putting a surge back into the circuit tripping the RCD. As for the washing machine, it probably has something wrong with the internal circuit of it creating a leakage of curerent to earth which is tripping it.

If it isnt broke dont bloody touch it until it bloody well is and if it is broke then make drawing of the connections before you remove the broken one and replace with a new one LoL

Thanks for the reply Nick.
This is in my out-laws house
and it seems to trip the sockets/lights.
It's getting annoying now.
The kitchen light is not fluorescent, just a standard centre light.
As for the WM, when it goes into a spin cycle same thing happens.
Where do you think the problem lies, and what do you suggest we do?
The house is rented from Local Housing Ass.

If you are renting it from local housing assoc then give them a call, the kitchen light thing sounds like a wiring fault then, and the washing machine could be just the machines faulty. get the housing people involved first and see if they can sort it out, it is their property after all.
