Tiling my bathroom!! Please help :)

Post by imstuck »

Hey all....

Im in the process of diy'ing my house.

Anyway i have done a room of dot and dab on the walls and have sorted that,

however in my bad bathroom i have pulled the tiles off and would like to retile correctly so it will be level and will NOT leak as it does now.

The tiles however have pulled away and have left the wall very uneven, what would be the recommendations from you guys...

Also very nasty plumbing work needs attention... will post pics below...

any tips and pointers would be great....

the celing is another issue....

just want everything so it will survive a bathroom ::b ::b

You are going to have some fun here

Do you know what the old lead pipes are for? I take it you will be replacing or removing these?

Some of those walls don't look too clever, do you know what is on the orange-brown one?

I am thinking that perhaps screwing aqua panel to that wall would be a good idea?

the ceilings are two different heights, where the cupboard used to be, are you going to straighten this out and make the ceiling all one level?

How good are you at plumbing?

I'd be tempted to use plastic pipe and then you do not need to bond them (supplementary bonding ), but I would use compression fittings rather then pushfit as they are cheaper and I have heard a couple of bad things about them failing

I think water is running through the led pipes!! EEEEK!! ::b ::b

Hmmm as far as i know the water tank was long disconnected and therefore i thought it was not on lead, but apprantly is so.

Will be looking to remove that wall and yes replace the lead with decent pipes.

the walls look fckd and I do not have a clue in the world what is on them walls!! :(

Im so lost on this one, I was thinking a false celing would cover that mess up and therefore sort that mess out or is that a bad idea...

it actually used to be a boiler room but it had a very weak NON supporting wall so i knocked it down, hoping to increase my bathroom size, so i can get a standup shower in there!

only plumbing ive done is change taps.....

It'd be a good idea to see where the lead pipes are leading to and remove them if possible.

What type of heating system do you have, is it a combi?

The funny coloured wall looks a bit like a really weak mix of mortar, hence it is orange/brown due to the sand.

False ceiling is a good idea

Compression fittings are pretty easy to use!

There is quite a lot of advice in the plumbing section on how to cut and join most types of pipe - http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/plumbing_centre.htm

This all looks worse than it actually is, the old tiles fitted with sand/cement will always destroy the walls in this manner, particularly the cinder blocks if you're not careful.

The lead need replacing, in fact if you have lead pipes I'd be taking a good look at the water tank in the loft and the hot water cylinder.

My advice, get a plumber in to do the donkey work, he will do in 2-3 days what it will take you 2-3 weeks.

Strip all the paper back, the walls will require bonding and skimming.

False ceiling is a good idea, that will cover a lot of mess.

Ultimately don't think of the entire job in one go, it can become overwhelming if you've not done anything of this scale before, so take it one step at a time.

However having said that, it will be a whole world easier for you to suffer a week or two with no bathroom and restricted services and get the room sorted out than it would to do it piecemeal.

So before you go any further organise a plumber and a plasterer and the rest is quite straight forward.

I've got some more pics if necessary,

the lead pipes are gone and Hepworth plastic pipes have been fitted...

now my question is, I need to either

1. Tile the walls

2. Just get smooth waterproof/moisture proof walls....

please take a look at the on the second post.

I need to get this finished but im not sure how to get this finished off... ::b ::b

How is the best way of fitting the joists for the false celing?

The bathroom is a pain, and i just dont want to be stripping it down to brick/concrete blocks....

Please advise the best way....

Flase celing to be done, but however the stupid guy leaft a really bad mess where he removed the lead pipe...

Please advise the best way of getting this done....

walls tiled/waterproofed and smooth'ed

If the walls are brick/block

knock all that old plaster off and get a plasterer in to plaster the whole lot

If you have the room then dot and dab the walls, Batten and Aquapanel the walls in the Shower area and dot and dab the joining walls after A.P has been fitted to get the same depth.

Can you not just overboard the ceiling area?

If you need a waterproof finish then you will have to use aquapanel and then a tanking kit and then tank it like this-

Thanks for the link and all your help UHM!!!

could not have done half of this without any of your help.

So again many many thanks!

Other think i was going to ask...

Areas that will not come into direct contact with water but are in the bathroom shall i just use normal plasterboards there?

Where would i get the waterproofing liquids and tapes that are needed for the shower area?

If you see the pic above... the chimney will it need to be knocked further to allow for the shower if i want it to go in that corner...?

At the moment I am thinking of fixing normal plasterboard to the walls using timber rather then dry-wall is this a good idea? or is rendering followed by tiling a better idea?

Sorry for the long post and amount of questions.....

Personally I would just bond and skim the Chimney wall and then wait for it to fully dry and then Tank with the Bal WP1 Kit (available from Topps Tiles)

In fact, as said before by someone, get the whole Bathroom skimmed.
