Hi
I wish to fit a fan with light in conservatory the builders electrician left the wire hanging down ready for me to fit.The problem is on the connector for the fan there is a live neutral and earth connecting block but the wires to connect to it are earth, brown live, neutral black, and a grey ????? wire so I have an extra wire and its coloured grey which I have never come across before do i connect the others and leave the grey one unconnected ???

It looks like they have used three core and earth instead of two core and earth
I would put a terminal connector on the end of the grey wire and then tape it up well with insulating tape.
Then wire the light fitting and give it a try, it should be ok
Let us know how you get on with it please ?

Have you got one or two switches for the fan and light?, i think you will find he has wired it with three core and earth to allow a spare switch line for the fan to use as well as the light so you can have two switches on the one cable, sharing the neutral for both purposes.

He could of put some brown sleeving on the wires

Thats good to know then, glad it all works out . If you did want to add another switch at a later date for the fan then you would just need to break the tw lives at the fan between lights and fan then put another switch to control the spare core at your existing switch position.
