I am right in saying that if a programme (Advanced System Care) does a scan of a PC and cleans a load of files out that end up in the Recycle Bin it is then safe to delete these files permanently?
I've had a whole load of small files cleared out, many of them are text files.
I believe that most or all of the files came from the registry scan but I am no expert on these matters.
My PC is running fine and these files have been in the Bin for about a week.

Having looked at what Advanced System Care does, I think that most of the files that it sent to the recycle bin are temp files, or registry entries that are no longer in use (probably from uninstalled software or Microsoft update uninstallers).
As they have been there a week, it is safe to assume that you do not need them and can empty the recycle bin.

For your own peace of mind, set a system restore point first. If you are not sure how to set a restore point, post back and tell us what OS you are using (XP or Vista).

Hi Smiffy, to set a restore point go to your "Control Panel" then select "System and Maintenance" then select "Backup and Restore Centre"

On the lhs of the window that opens you should see " Create a restore point or change settings" click on that.

Another window will pop up showing you which discs will be backed up at the bottom of the window is a button to "Create" a restore point click that and then enter name for your restore point.Your restore point will then be created.
