New extension planned

Hi, I'm an engineer from south Wales and am used to all sorts of DIY, although building regs are new to me.
I have submitted plans via a qualified bulding designer for a new single storey extension to my kitchen for which I will be doing most of the work myself including vaulted ceiling, 3 velux windows and lots of glass. Therefore this site has been found at the right time. No doubt I will have many questions as things move along
: I'll also post some pictures as I progress.
I knocked 2 cottages into one some time back and worked on building a kitchen/bath extension about 25yrs ago so know roughly what to do
.
I've read the messages on Part P, very interesting. Is the bottom line that I can do it myself providing I tell the local planning authority, do the work within electrical standards obviously, and then they will inspect it at their cost as part of my planning fee?
I have installed garage power/lights/spurs etc and have had some shocks so know when and what my limits are.
