corsa makes a terrible noise when turning to the right

Post by corsagirl15 »

H i everyone, yesterday my corsa developed a terrible noise when the steering wheel was turned right, not just on a full right lock but even when slightly turned. the car is a 1994 model. The sound is just like someone running something along metal railings. Any ideas anyone? :help:

Does the noise get faster if you drive faster....?
Does it only do it when moving, or when turning the steering wheel even if you are still?

I'm guessing its the brake disc rubbing on something. Could be a trapped stone, worn wheel bearings or worn out brake pads. If it were the brake pads it would also do it in a straight line when you apply the brakes, especially if applied very gently. Trapped stones usually dislodge themselves quite quickly - a few hours or days.
I have a peugeot that does this (though the noise is very quiet and you have to be listening out for it.) Changed the discs and pads as they needed doing anyway and the MOT man says the wheel bearing is fine.

Have you power steering on it? Steering perhaps slightly easier one way than the other, or both ways got heavier than usual recently?

If its doing it on the spot, its unlikely anything that rotates like brake disc or driveshaft.

Power steering system, plenty of reported faults on them.

How about.... loose cover somewhere rubbing a moving engine part, being pushed by the whel hub moving.
Just a thought, sometimes its the simple things.

Any idea at all where the noise is coming from? from one particualr side?

See if you can get someone to move the steering while you look around and or listen. :thumbright:

If you cant find it, take it somewhere. Steering /suspension faults can be dangerous.

Check your power steering fluid. See if any needs to be added. Does it only make noise to the right or does it make noise when you turn it the other way as well? Lift the front off the ground and see if it makes the same noise.

It is definetly on the right handside and it is louder underneath the car.It has got powersteering but that feels fine, not heavy or anything it sounds like something is knocking against something tinny/metal
