Add a shelf to existing shower.

Post by b135mh1 »

Hello,
New to the site but can I see I will be on here a lot investigating new projects!

I want to add a shelf (not recessed) to an existing tiled shower enclosure.

What material should I use so I can then tile over the shelf which wont be effected by heat and water?

Thanks.

I am thinking about too, I put in a new bathroom and never thought about a built-in shelf ::b . I don’t want to attach store bought shelves to the wall after all my trouble of tanking the shower area

Not sure how good built-in shelves would look though compared to recessed shelves. I was thinking perhaps about 3 corner shelves What are you thinking about doing?

I was going to perhaps build a triangular frame out of timber, treat with wood preservative, cover in Aquapanel, tank and tile. Was also thinking about adding zone 1 recessed lightening but that could be asking for trouble.

I think its better to remove existing tiles first and attaching the shelves into the wall, then tank and tile all afterwards with a slight slope of the tiles to avoid water sitting on the shelf.

Would be interested in hearing what the lads have to say

I am waiting for "the boss" to decide!!

She has a choice of either a couple of corner shelves or a long, straight shelf. Although will have to be careful with the positioning of the second option.

In the past I had a customer ask for tiled shelves after I had completed all the the tiling in their en-suite. I fixed a couple of batons to the wall, then screwed Wedi board (no need to tank) to the batons to form the shelves. I then tiled the Wedi and it looked as though the shelves had always been part of the design.
