Hi All

After some advice please.

My son has a 1997 1.0 Vauxhall Corsa, and wants to install some LED lights & charge a mobile phone by plugging these into the cigarette lighter. Here's the problem. The car is not fitted with a cigarette lighter, but has a blanking cap over where a cigatette lighter can be fitted.

Can anyone advise how easy it is to fit and wire a cigarette lighter into the vehicle.

Any suggestions/advice very much appreciated.

Cheers

quite easy; just need a switched live & earth. sometimes the wiring is there behind the blanking plug so even easier.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry to sound stupid, but how does a switched live and earth work, and would this be easy to install?

Cheers

basically the switched live is only on when the ignition is switched on, so to save the battery being drained.

earth completes the circuit (also cars are DC rather than AC electrics) and usually you ground / earth the circuit to the body of the car

If there is no wiring present, then you will have to find the relevant wire and take a feed from it to where the cigarette lighter socket will be.

you can use special blue clips to splice into the wiring without having to strip and resolder...their names escape me though. Basically you put the main part on the cable to be tapped and the secondary part of the connector holds the new wire, push top of connector into place with pliers and job done.

Maplins / most car accessory stores will stock what you need.
