The code on the bottom is for windows.
There will be a different code (on seperate documentation) for word.
Ask yer mate to dig out all the paperwork and any disks that came with it for you.

Feva,
Did the previous owner use Word? If so the code may still be on the computer.
Download Belarc Advisor from:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
When run it should tell you exactly what is on the computer and all the codes for any software.
------------------------------
You can also download S.I.W. from:
http://www.gtopala.com/
That will also inform you of what is installed and all the codes.
------------------------------
Failing that, have a look here:
http://microsoft1.software.informer.com ... tain-help/
Not read it all but there may be some help there.

Was it a dodgy copy of word or possibly a trial that came with the laptop?
If you want free Office software, you could try Open Office. Not really used it much myself, but I'm sure it allows you to save as .doc .xls and the like.

its the proper version on the laptop. the problem is my mate who i bought it has split up with his girlfriend and moved down south, i bought it when they first started to have problems, ive checked everything that came in the box and theres nothing in there, i asked them to have a look but then they split up.
ive tried running the programs recommended in this post and they havent worked!

Ring Microsoft, they are pretty ok with that (or at least used to be)
They just want to be sure that the copy is not nicked, they can check the code for you

The problem with these key finder programs is that the key they return isn't necessarily the key that was entered - just one that is valid and matches the stored hash values of the original one.
Try it with one of them and compare it to the one on the sticky label on the case of the PC.
If Office products are asking you to enter a product key then it's most likely that it was a trial version installed and the trial period has expired.
