I have an old dell inpisron 1000 laptop with 256 memory, if I buy a 1gb memory, can I just remove the exsisting one, & replace with new one?
I only have 1 memory slot.

I don't see why not. You may need to email Dell to find out what is the correct type of memory you need

I read the sticker on the exsisting one, and got the same, only bigger!

Use the memory advisor tool on
The Crucial website and it will tell you what type you need and the maximum you can install.
Then buy it from somewhere cheaper.

It won't work!
The PC motherboards can only handle memory of a certain size. If you put something in that's too big, the motherboard can't reconise it or use it. AKA Computer no worker!
