Couple of grout queries

Post by sanitygone »

Is there something that can be used to whiten up grout that is only a few months old that has become discoloured after plaster dust has got into it? I’ve heard cleaning it with bleach mixed with bicarbonate of soda might help. Is this a good idea?

The other query is to do with different colours in floor grout. The floor was grouted with grey grout but this was uneven so the tiler put more grout in few days later , now the grout is much darker in places than others making it look like it’s dirty. Is there something easy that can be done to sort this out that doesn’t involve sealing the grout?

Has no one got any suggestions how to sort out at least one of our grout problems? The wall grout isn’t terrible it just doesn’t look as white as it should since we had a problem with lots of plaster dust in that room. I would appreciate any ideas that can help to get it to look like the new grout it is.

The first time the floor grout was done it dried all the same colour. It was shallower in places which made the tiles look uneven this is why it was topped up but it dried different colours after this was done.

Do a search on ebay for "grout pen" should solve both these problems.

for the white grout try a hard toothbrush an bleach an elbow grease..if any kids in house lock them out of kitchen or bathroom.
or a grout rake an elbow grease then re-grout then a tin of sealguard an seal the grout.

for grey grout has it just been grouted?
if not could be differant colour of grout or a differant batch number.

firstly...call the tile fixer back and ask him to rectify the floor.

for the white grout, try this stuff

cleaning-grout-t16799.html

I would use it with a stiff toothbrush as well, so you can dislodge the dust.

Worth a go, tescos have it for £2

Last time i used a pen, it looked ok (not great), then the covering started to peal off. Are they better these days?

We used to use neat bleach and leave overnight and scrub off in the morning (ok if you have another toilet) used to work great but we had to do it every couple of month's (downside of having white grout)
If you think nobody cares, try missing a couple of payments..

Don't know sorry. Just pointing out that this product exists for a quick and easy fix but never actually used one.

Thank you everyone for your ideas. I've heard good and bad about grout pens. I think we'll try the bleach route, no second toilet so we'll just have to put up with it  .I think as far as the floor grout is concerned I will have to get the contractor to come back, his suggestion was to use a sealer which I do not want.

The tiler who did the floor is not being very helpful, he wants to seal the floor which I do not want. It's a pity because the patchy grout is the only thing that spoils an otherwise lovely new kitchen.
