Your advice would be much appreciated?

Is it reasonable to expect that the reclaimed tiles I've taken delivery of are all a similar depth? When I ordered them online, the company claims the tiles would be c25.4mm thick but the variance is greater - 18mm to 28mm.

The tiling company (who are laying them) we are using have advised that we get them sent back - is this reasnoble given they are reclaimed tiles? Should we expect our tiling company to find a solution? e.g. laying them using different depths of cement (or whatever material is used) Any advice would be much appreciated before I call the company who delivered them and demand a refund or re-delivery.

i woould say ...listen to your tilers ! saves a lot of grief and they generally know best ..or you decide to live with it ? different sizes are quite common especially for old kit ...ruloe of thumb is to lay them so that one side is straight per row .

The range they quoted was 12.7mm - 25.4mm The lowest they delivered is 13mm, highest 29mm, the majority range between 18mm - 22mm. So not entirely unreasonable on the part of my supplier.

My advice to others planning on using reclaimed tiles is to attempt to negotiate with your supplier an average depth and acceptable mm range either side of the average prior to buying and taking delivery - although this may not always be possible - to avoid expensive mistakes.

4mm difference is not unusable! any good tiler should be able to over come that easily, just size them first see how the floor lies then lay them accordingly! its no different to nonregd slates really!

trouble is, if you insist on ur tilers lsying the tiles and a problem arises, they'll blame it on the depth differences, saying u should have listened to them and returned the tiles.

Tiles could have been graded before being laid. thats what you have to do with slate etc. Either client does it or the tiler does it and charges extra for doing so.

You start laying using the thickest tiles and thinnest bed and finish with a thicker bed but thinner tiles. Not a problem for legite experienced pro tilers.
